Declaring Pre-Medicine Advising
Pre-Medicine Advising serves undergraduate students at Syracuse University who are on a pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, or pre-podiatry track. These health professions prefer or require a committee letter for admission.
All other College of Arts and Sciences students are served by their Academic and Career Advisor on the Health and Sciences Advising Team.
To be assigned to a Pre-Medicine advisor students must meet eligibility requirements:
- Declare a major, and
- Complete one year at Syracuse University, and
- Have a cumulative Syracuse University GPA of a 3.4, and
- Complete a minimum of 10 credits of biology, chemistry, physics, or math (BCPM) coursework with a minimum 3.4 BCPM GPA at Syracuse University.
Students submit their Pre-Medicine Advising Declaration form in MySlice under the eForms tab.
Students with declared majors in the College of Arts and Sciences who declare pre-medicine advising will be assigned a pre-medicine advisor their sophomore year. They will be notified by email that their advisor has changed. Their pre-medicine advisor serves as an academic and career advisor and is responsible for assisting with registration, processing university forms, and graduation requirements in addition to pre-medicine advising.
Students in other schools or colleges at Syracuse University who declare pre-medicine advising will be assigned to a pre-medicine advisor who will serve as a supplemental advisor focusing on pre-medicine requirements only.
Maintaining Pre-Medicine Advising
To maintain their pre-medicine advising declaration students must have a 3.4 cumulative and science GPA at Syracuse University. If a student drops below these requirements, they receive a pre-medicine warning and are required to meet with their pre-medicine advisor to discuss a success plan. After one semester, if their Syracuse University cumulative and science GPA do not meet requirements, they are removed from pre-medicine advising and reassigned to another academic and career advisor.
