You Otto Know: Getting Ready for Syracuse University

Welcome to Syracuse University! We’re excited to have you here and to begin supporting you as you prepare for your first semester.

Below are a few important steps to complete now to stay on track and feel confident heading into the fall. Think of this as your quick checklist to get started.

Take Your Placement Exams

Deadline: NOW!

Placement exams help ensure you are enrolled in the right courses for your skill level.

  • Log into MySlice -> Advising → Placement Exams
  • Complete:
    • Math placement exam
    • Foreign Language (FL) placement exam
Note: You may or may not need to take a foreign language in your first semester, but a placement score must be on file regardless. If you have no prior experience, simply choose a language that interests you—the exam will be very brief.

If English is not your first language:
You must also complete the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) exam

ESOL Testing Dates:

  • Thursday, June 4 (12:00 AM – 11:59 PM EST)
  • Saturday, June 6 (12:00 AM – 11:59 PM EST)

REGISTER HERE by Tuesday, June 3 at 11:59 PM EST (no late sign-ups)

Complete the First-Year Registration Survey

On or around June 1, the Office of the Registrar will send you the First-Year Registration Survey (FYRS) to your syr.edu email address.

Please complete this as soon as possible. This survey is not the same as registering for classes, but it plays an important role in the process. Your responses help your advisor begin building your fall schedule and ensure your courses align with your academic interests.

Send Your External Credit

If you have completed any AP, IB, or dual enrollment coursework, be sure to send your official scores or transcripts.

This process can take time, so we strongly encourage you to complete this step early.

AP Credit

  • Log into the College Board website
  • Send your AP scores to Syracuse University (School Code: 2328)

Even if you are waiting for new AP scores to be released, you should still send your existing scores now. Any new scores will be sent automatically once they are available.

IB Credit

  • Contact your high school and request that an official copy of your IB diploma be sent to:
astransfercredit@syr.edu (preferred) or general Syracuse admissions.

Please note:

  • Only Higher Level (HL) exams are accepted
  • A minimum score of 5 is required
  • Standard Level (SL) exams are not eligible for SU credit

Dual Enrollment / Transfer Credit

  • Request an official transcript from the college or university where you completed the course
  • Have it sent to astransfercredit@syr.edu (preferred) or general parchment

Please note:
