Internships, and other opportunities to engage in meaningful research and service off campus, can be valuable educational experiences. They are a great way to explore career fields, help develop new skills, provide an opportunity apply classroom learning to the workplace, and serve as resume/cv builders. We encourage students to seek them out!

Any student interested in earning course credit for research (PSY 291-294; 491-494), internship experience (PSY 270, 470), or independent study (PSY 290, 490) in psychology must obtain a Syracuse University faculty member sponsor to oversee these activities in conjunction with non-SU employees. A teaching or graduate assistant cannot serve as a sponsor.

It is the student’s responsibility to identify a faculty member who is willing to serve in this capacity. Faculty sponsors are responsible for: assisting the student in determining learning objectives, goals, activities and tasks of the internship; providing guidance during the internship experience; using assignments and evaluations to arrive at a final grade for the student’s experience.

Registration must take place in the same academic term as the experience. Registration for course credit cannot be done retroactively for activities performed without faculty oversight. There is a minimum of 45 total hours of work required per credit. Internships which extend over two terms (but not two summer sessions) must be registered as two separate internships.
