Kathleen Corrado, executive director of the Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute (FNSSI) in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named to Virginia’s Scientific Advisory Committee by that state’s governor Ralph Northam. Corrado, who previously served as chair of the committee, will serve as a member representing the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD).

As part of the committee, Corrado will be responsible for reviewing the laboratory operations of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. She and the group will also make recommendations to the director of the department and the state’s forensic science board concerning implementation of new programs, protocols for testing and examination methods and guidelines for the presentation of results in court.

The committee, which meets twice annually, consists of 13 members including the Director of Virginia’s Department of Forensic Science and 12 members appointed by the Governor of Virginia.

Other professional appointments for Corrado include: former chair of the New York Crime Laboratory Advisory Committee, former member of the New York State Forensic Science Commission, former board member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB), former member of the Scientific Area Committee and the Biological Data and Interpretation Subcommittee of the National Institute of Science and Technology’s Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science (OSAC) and current member of the ANAB Forensic Accreditation Council, which is the longest established provider of accreditation based on ISO standards for forensic agencies in the United States.
