The Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) committee is composed of faculty members Drs. Christa Kelleher, Rob Moucha, and Tripti Bhattacharya, a representative from our departmental staff, Operations Specialist Tracy Steele, and a graduate student representative, Eliza Hurst. As a department, it is impossible for us to ignore the lack of diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) fields, and the Geosciences remains one of the least diverse STEM disciplines (Bernard and Cooperdock, 2018). This new committee will work collaboratively across the department to curate resources and recommendations that will continue to strengthen our departmental academic culture, make necessary policy changes, and bolster and our support of diversity in all forms. Over the next several years, our department will undertake an actionable path to further our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our department and within the Geosciences as a whole. We see this as central to our departmental success and ongoing mission to train the next generation of geoscientists and further our collective knowledge about the world at large.
