Dual Au.D./Ph.D. Program in Audiology

Syracuse University also offers a combined Au.D./Ph.D. degree program for those students interested in receiving both a professional doctoral degree (Au.D.) and a research doctoral degree (Ph.D.).

The Au.D./Ph.D. minimally requires at least 18 unique credits beyond the Au.D. requirements, which allows students to pursue both their clinical training and their research training in a rigorous, intensive and streamlined program.

Students must be accepted and enrolled into the Au.D. program at Syracuse University prior to applying to the dual program (Au.D./Ph.D.). Application to the Au.D./Ph.D. program may only be made after successful completion of (minimally) the first year of the Au.D. program.

Each student in the Au.D./Ph.D. program must have a faculty research sponsor, and this sponsorship must be agreed upon prior to the time of application and acceptance into the dual program. Students must pass a prequalifying exam at the end of their first year in the Au.D./Ph.D. program and will complete a guided research experience early in the program culminating in a submitted publication prior to taking the qualifying exam. Qualifying exams will be taken at the end of their coursework.

These academic and research experiences lead to the dissertation, which is typically completed following the clinical externship year of the Au.D.. It is anticipated that the dual degree can be completed in 6-7 years of full-time study.
