Clinical Practicum
Students will have a wide variety of clinical experiences. They will begin work in the Gebbie Speech-Language-Hearing Clinics, where they will receive maximum supervision. The clinics serve the Syracuse community and surrounding areas. Audiology practica in the Gebbie Hearing Clinic include diagnostic evaluations of clients of all ages as well as participation in a comprehensive Hearing Aid Delivery Program. Students obtain first-hand experience in the entire hearing aid delivery process, including evaluation, selection, fitting, and counseling. Aural rehabilitation practicum is obtained in the Gebbie Clinic or at a variety of external practicum sites.
After their first academic year, students will be placed at one of our local extern sites, which include clinical rotations in hospitals, private-practices, rehabilitation centers, and schools in the Syracuse area. Through these various externships, students are not only exposed to a variety of diagnostic and rehabilitative modalities, but also have opportunities to observe procedures such as otologic surgeries and neuroimaging. We have extern sites located in less populated areas that serve more rural communities and other sites that are based in large metropolitan areas. Externship sites in the central NY region for audiology students include hospitals & medical centers in Syracuse, Albany, Utica and Rochester. During the fourth year of the program, audiology students are placed in a full-time clinical externship. These full-time externship sites may be located within the Syracuse area or in many other locations in New York State and across the country, such as:
