Prof Sally Cornelison Discovers Portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti in Vasari’s “Christ Carrying the Cross” at the Franciscan Church of Santa Croce in Florence, Italy

Prof Sally Cornelison's discovery of a portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti embedded in Vasari’s “Christ Carrying the Cross” at the Franciscan church of Santa Croce in Florence was mentioned in a recent (3/16) article in the Florence edition of the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera.”  

The panel is currently undergoing restoration, the funding of which has been spearheaded by Florence Graduate Program alumna Paola Vojnovic (‘06), who is in charge of Philanthropy Relations and Outreach for the Opera of Santa Croce. Cleaning of the monument to Michelangelo that is next to Vasari’s painting has concluded and was unveiled on 3/24/18.
