The Department of Science Teaching offers SCI 104-105 as an introductory science course sequence for non-majors that satisfies the Syracuse University liberal arts core requirements for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics division.  These three-credit courses feature experiential, hands-on inquiry learning opportunities that connect physical science concepts to real-world applications through integrated lab activities, engaging demonstrations, and a variety of team-based problem-solving tasks.

There are no prerequisites for SCI 104-105, thus, undergraduate students from a wide range of programs and majors from across the various schools and colleges at Syracuse University regularly enroll in these courses.

The SCI 104-105 courses can be completed individually, or as a sequence, in any particular order.

SCI 104: Science-Quests and Questions: Physical Phenomena I (Fall Semester)

Science for non-majors seeking to explain curious events through laboratory experiences and study of rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, hydrologic cycle, motion and gravity, energy and basic astronomy.

SCI 105: Science-Quests and Questions: Physical Phenomena II (Spring Semester)

Science for non-majors seeking to explain curious events through laboratory experiences and study of the nature of science, properties of matter, chemical reactions, mixtures and solutions, waves, and sound.

Students who wish to teach biology, chemistry, earth sciences, or physics at the secondary school level should satisfy the requirements for the B.A./B.S. in their science major and dually enroll in the School of Education.
