Stories We are Told, Stories We Tell: Explorations in Ethnographic Methods

February 26-27, 2019

• On Tuesday, February 26, an evening panel of renowned scholar-storytellers who work on religion, gender and history in and beyond India in a moderated conversation about the ways stories are woven throughout their work. With Kirin Narayan (Australian National University), Joyce Flueckiger (Emory University), Corrine Dempsey (Nazareth College), and moderator Priti Ramamurthy (University of Washington)

• On Wednesday, February 27, a workshop for advanced graduate students. The visiting scholars, along with Gold and Wadley and others, will work with the graduate students to reflect on and improve their research projects.

From Gods to Social Justice: Indian Folk Artists Challenging Tradition, April 6 to May 18, with an Open House/reception celebrating Susan Wadley, April 20, 4:30 - 8 pm.

Exhibition at ArtRage Gallery, Syracuse NY 

Professor Wadley, along with Geraldine Forbes, will be curating an exhibition featuring two South Asian art forms, Mithila paintings by women from northern Bihar, India, and pata scrolls painted by primarily men from the Bengal region of India. Events during the ArtRage exhibition period will include an evening with Professor Arthur Flowers, whose book on MLK, Jr. is illustrated by a scroll painter (and whose scroll Arthur will show) and gallery talks by Geraldine Forbes and Susan Wadley, as well as an evening of dance and a film on social issues in India.

Funded by the Departments of Anthropology and Religion, the South Asia Center, the Humanities Center, and the Ray Smith Symposium, College of Arts and Sciences.
