Congratulations to Lorenza D’Angelo, who won the 2021 Mary Hatch Marshall Award for the best essay written by a graduate student in the humanities at Syracuse University.

The Mary Hatch Marshall Award is an annual award presented by the Library Associates at Syracuse University, honoring Mary Hatch Marshall, a co-founder of the Library Associates. Mary Hatch Marshall was the Jesse Truesdell Peck Professor of English Literature, and was the first woman to be appointed to full professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Syracuse University. The Mary Hatch Marshall Award is “intended to honor and help perpetuate the scholarly standards and the generous spirit that characterized [Mary Hatch Marshall’s] inspirational teaching career,” and carries a cash prize of $1,000.

The winner is selected from submissions by part-time and full-time graduate students in all of the humanities programs at Syracuse University, by a faculty panel selected to judge the essays. All submitting programs are required to have a representative at the faculty panel. Lorenza D’Angelo’s essay was selected as the philosophy department’s candidate for the award based on a departmental committee’s review of anonymous essay submissions by philosophy graduate students.
