Research Interests
Serena Wang’s research and teaching areas include contemporary Chinese music, global musicology, and music and diaspora.
Education and Professional Experience
She received her PhD in Musicology from CUNY Graduate Center, MM in Music History from College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, and BM in Piano Performance from Northwestern University. Prior to coming to Syracuse University, she served as an adjunct lecturer at CUNY Medgar Evers College and a writing coach at SUNY Empire State College.
Honors and Awards
She is the recipient of the Graduate Center’s Martin E. Segel Dissertation Fellowship in 2017. Her dissertation, “New Chinese Music in New York City: From Revival to Musical Transnationalism,” was nominated for the Graduate Center’s Barry Brooks Dissertation Award in 2021.
