The Department of African American Studies (AAS) in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences presented the following awards to its 2011 graduates during the annual Graduation Awards Ceremony May 3:

The Anna Julia Cooper/Carter G. Woodson Award was presented to Na’Tasha Webb-Prather, who will graduate with Distinction and is a College Marshal. The award is presented to the graduate with the highest academic average in African American Studies. Webb-Prather also received the W.E.B. Dubois Award, which is presented to an AAS major with the highest overall academic average.

 The Angela Davis/Walter Rodney Award was presented to Jonathan Boll Thomas and Janan Wyatt. The award is presented to graduates who minored in AAS and have highest overall academic average.

The Fannie Lou Hamer Service Award was presented to Alice Feng in recognition of her work to establish and grow the AAS Peer-Editing project.

The W.E.B. Dubois Award and the Fannie Lou Hamer Service Award also include a monetary gift donated by SU alumnus Adolphus Belk, ‘97.

The 2011 AAS Community Service Award was presented to Mary Nelson, a community activist and leader in the City of Syracuse.
