The study of Classics typically includes both the study of languages (Latin and Ancient Greek) and culture (history, material culture, gender, philosophy, politics, and religion). We offer two distinct types of majors: Classics (with Greek or Latin Emphasis), in which most credits will be earned through courses in the languages; and Classical Civilization (which emphasizes culture and requires less, or even no, language study).

Major in Classics with Greek Emphasis

The Major in Classics with Greek Emphasis usually consists of 27 credits in Greek, with at least 18 credits coming from courses numbered 300 and above. Courses in Latin may be substituted up to a total of 9 credits. Courses from the approved list for Classical Civilization may be substituted up to a total of 6 credits with the approval of the Director.

Major in Classics with Latin Emphasis

The Major in Classics with Latin Emphasis usually consists of 27 credits in Latin, with at least 18 credits coming from courses numbered 300 and above. Courses in Greek may be substituted up to a total of 9 credits.
