As part of the new "BREW @ SU" project (Biology Research Experience in Winter @ SU) organized by Carlos Castañeda, associate professor in the biology and chemistry departments, students from Onondaga Community College spent a week at Syracuse University in January 2022 working with biology professors.

The BREW @ SU program, supported by Castañeda's National Science Foundation CAREER award, stems from the collaboration between OCC's Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP). Students from OCC were paired with Syracuse University Professors Carlos Castañeda, Kate Lewis, Heather Coleman, Sarah E. Hall and Katie Becklin for an immersive science laboratory research experience.

At the end of the week-long program students presented what they learned to faculty and their peers.

In an article featured on the OCC news website, student participant Amina Amin said, "It was amazing. Before it started we were given readings to do. I said, 'you've put yourself someplace you don't belong.' Once I got there I felt so welcome and confident. And now I'm looking forward to applying to another school and doing research."
