Syracuse University Graduate Fellowships

Funding for graduate study at Syracuse University is determined at the departmental level.

Students must be nominated by the admitting department for consideration for a Syracuse University Fellowship. Graduate applications received on or before January 4th receive priority consideration.

American Association of University Women (AAUW)

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers the following six different types of fellowships and grants to women graduate students:

Animal Behavior Society

The Animal Behavior Society (ABS) offers several types of grants and awards to graduate students.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards PhD fellowships to European citizens who are pursuing their PhD outside Europe. Application deadlines are February 1st, June 1st, and October 1st of each year.

Company of Biologists

The Company of Biologists is a not-for-profit publisher which publishes the following journals: Development, Journal of Cell Science, The Journal of Experimental Biology, and Disease Models & Mechanisms. These journals provide Travelling Fellowships of up to £2500 (approx. US$3800) to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers who wish to make collaborative visits to other laboratories. These fellowships are designed to offset the cost of travel and other expenses, and are open to all nationalities. Applications deadlines are April 30th, August 31st, and December 31st.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Star Fellowships

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program offers fellowships to master's and PhD students in the environmental sciences. Applications are accepted beginning in April through a late May deadline.

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs

There are three different types of Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs: Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral. Application deadlines are in November.

GEM Fellowships

One of the three available GEM Fellowships—the PhD Science Fellowship—is available to PhD students in the biological sciences. The National GEM Consortium (GEM) is a network of corporations, government laboratories, universities, and research institutions that enables qualified students from under-represented communities to pursue graduate education in applied science and engineering. Applications are accepted between July 1st and November 15th.

Graduate Women International

The Graduate Women International organization provides fellowships, grants and awards to women graduate students and post-docs.

L'Oréal USA For Women in Science

L'Oréal USA For Women in Science annually recognizes and rewards five U.S.-based women researchers for their outstanding contributions in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Recipients receive up to $60,000 each for their postdoctoral research. Applications are accepted in February and March.

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) individual fellowships are available to predoctoral (F30 and F31) and postdoctoral (F32) applicants who have a focus on the biomedical sciences.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) offers funding opportunities for graduate students who are currently pursuing an advanced degree in a science or engineering discipline.

Sigma Delta Epsilon / Graduate Women in Science (SDE-GWIS) Fellowships

The Sigma Delta Epsilon / Graduate Women in Science (SDE/GWIS) National Fellowship Program offers fellowships to help increase knowledge in the fundamental sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women. The application deadline is January 15th.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR)

The Sigma Xi (Scientific Research Society) Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program assists students in the sciences and engineering. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding. There are two annual applications cycles, with March 15th and October 15th deadlines.

Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB)

The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) offers two types of graduate-level research funding support: Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) and Fellowship of Graduate Student Travel (FGST). These funding awards are available to students from the United States and also to international students.  The annual application deadline is in October.

Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) Graduate Research Excellence Grants

The Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) Graduate Research Excellence Grants assist both 1) students in the early stages of their PhD programs by enabling them to collect preliminary data (to pursue additional sources of support) or to enhance the scope of their research beyond current funding limits; and 2) students in the later stages of their PhD programs, for which the funds can be used to enhance the scope of their dissertation research, such as to conduct additional experiments or field work. Applications are due in mid-February (early PhD students) and in mid-September (advanced PhD students).

COS Pivot

The Grants.gov database allows users to search for, identify and apply for federal grants available through 26 grant-making agencies of the United States government.
