Art history graduate student Elizabeth (Liz) Bryson (’18) has won the inaugural Laurinda Dixon Prize for the best Symposium Paper written for the 2018 Art History Graduate Symposium. Her thesis is titled “Performative Spaces: Subject and Spectator in Walker Evans's Message from the Interior (1966)” and was supervised by prof Samuel Johnson who completed his first year in our department. The Laurinda Dixon prize supplants the Elizabeth Gilmore Holt Prize last awarded in 2017. It is named in honor of professor emeritus of art history, prof Laurinda Dixon who retired in 2017 after 35 years of teaching in our department. An acclaimed art historian, prof Dixon designed the M.A. symposium for our graduate students and served as director of Graduate Studies for many years. She is delighted that Liz is the first winner of the Laurinda Dixon Prize. Bravo Liz!
