Cultural Resources
The resources of Bird Library for studies in art history and music history include over 62,000 monographs and 230 periodicals. The Special Collections Research Center housed in Bird Library preserves papers relating to, among others, Anna Hyatt Huntington, William Gropper, Louis Lozowick, Jacob Lawrence, Margaret Bourke-White, and Marcel Breuer. It also houses rare books by William Blake and Owen Jones, an extensive collection of historic photographs, and an outstanding collection of calendar art from India, among countless other artifacts. The acclaimed Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive containing nearly 500,000 items ranging from the earliest experimental recordings on tinfoil to modern digital media and album cover art, is also part of Special Collections. The Syracuse University art collections spread across four galleries and the nearby Everson Museum of Art have notable holdings of American and European paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, and sculpture. Light Work, the photography center on campus, runs an internationally renowned artists residency program. The central New York area is home to many other fine libraries, art museums, music venues, and historical sites open to students studying at Syracuse University.
