Get advice at any stage, with any writing. From academic assignments across disciplines to job search documents, grad school applications, presentations, and poetry, we help writers learn the moves.

The Writing Center offers personalized, expert, one-on-one consulting to all Syracuse University writers. SU students, faculty, and staff may all use our services.

In-person and online appointments are available days and evenings Mondays through Fridays. New in 2026: Sunday asynchronous hours.

Three ways to connect with a writing consultant

  • Face-to-face: Appointments and drop ins welcome at 101 H.B. Crouse Hall
  • Synchronous: Make an appointment to chat in real time online.
  • Asynchronous: Submit specific questions and a brief draft (up to 5 pages).

Consultants help writers

  • Gain confidence as writers and thinkers.
  • Interpret assignments, discuss readings and criteria, plan.
  • Consider choices about audience, focus, reasoning, organization.
  • Develop ideas with specificity.

Note: SU and ESF graduate students may also make use of the Graduate Editing Service for selected documents. GES editors provide free editing and proofreading on final drafts of dissertations and master’s theses, articles, conference presentations, and grant proposals.
