Professor Ucci is using the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence and the geometry of symmetric products to study the topological K-theory of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. He is also applying K-theory and equivariant homotopy theory to investigate the suspension order of a finite product of projective spaces.

John J. Ucci, whom we know as Jack, earned his B. Eng, at Stevens Institute of Technology in 1959, and his MA and Ph.D. from Berkeley in 1964, writing a dissertation under Edwin Spanier. He was an instructor at MIT 1964-1966, lecturer at Warwick 1966-1968, visiting mathematician at ETH in Zurich summer 1968, and assistant professor at Indiana 1968-1969. Jack joined SU as an associate professor in 1969 and has been a professor since 1976. He had an NSF research grant 7/1/72 to 12/31/74, and was a visiting professor with a stipend at CINVESTAV in Mexico City in fall 1984.

His dissertation, Immersions and embeddings of Dold manifolds, was published by Topology in 1965, and he has 15 papers in all. His research interests are suspension order of spaces, polynomial maps of spheres, K-theory of various spaces related to Eilenberg-MacLane spaces, and K-theory and immersions of projective Stiefel manifolds. Jack gave an invited 30-minute presentation at the Lefschetz International Congress at CINVESTRA in Mexico City in November 1984, a lecture at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in October 1984, and an invited 1-hour lecture at a topology conference in Oaxtepec, Mexico in August 1989. He directed one Ph.D. dissertation, that of Alexander Lindsey in 1971. Two others, Martha Folk and Paul Lorczak, left with incomplete work.

Jack has often served on the Department's executive committee — 1978-1989, 1980-1982, 1985-1987, 1991-1993, 1994-1996, 1997-1999, 2001-2002, was on the graduate committee 1989-1990 and was a member of 4 committees on reappointment, tenure or promotion, and was chair of one. For the College of Arts and Sciences he has also served on the Curriculum Committee and the Promotions Committee, and he is a member of Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.

Joyce was visiting her brother at Berkeley about 1963, and she and Jack met. They were married in 1966. Joyce is a very fine pianist, gives concerts in the area, at Hamilton College since 1981, and gives private lessons. They have taken trips to Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and to Italy. For 30 years Jack has been running at noon, 6 miles a day and 6 times a week. He used to run in local races and regional championship races in Boston, New Jersey and at Penn State.
