Student Spotlight: Kate Lanza ‘15
Arts and Sciences senior prepares for life after Syracuse
Kate Lanza ’15 developed an interest in neuroscience during her senior year of high school in Leominster, Massachusetts, a curiosity that led her to the College of Arts and Sciences, where she is pursuing a dual major in psychology and neuroscience and a minor in biology.
“I chose Syracuse University because as soon as I visited, I fell in love,” Lanza says. “The campus aesthetics paired with the unique academic programs made the decision easy for me.”
During her career at Syracuse, Lanza has immersed herself in many of the assets of campus life. Following her passion for neuroscience, Lanza works in research labs in both psychology and biology. She also participates in the Office of Engagement Opportunities’ Young Scholars program, volunteering each week to tutor young refugees at the Syracuse Boys and Girls Club. In her free time, Lanza works a part-time job off-campus and enjoys down time with her roommates and friends, connections she says she values most from her experience at Syracuse University.
“Throughout my three and a half years here, I have met people who have truly changed not only what I think but how I think,” Lanza says. “It’s rare to have an opportunity to learn from both professionals and students with such diverse and dynamic backgrounds.”
An adventurer at heart, Lanza can often be found exploring Syracuse and the surrounding area. “After studying abroad in Florence last semester, it has been a little hard to stay still. I spend a lot of my time on the weekends, if I’m not working, visiting Green Lakes and hiking. Syracuse has a lot of hidden gems, and finding them is one of my favorite ways to get to know the area.”
Lanza plans to continue pursuing her interest in neuroscience after graduation by furthering her research and attending graduate school. Lanza believes that her academic career and extracurricular opportunities have contributed to her confidence and understanding of her chosen field, for which she expresses much gratitude as she eagerly anticipates advancing in the field and establishing a fruitful professional career.
