Jacoby Loury ’15 will graduate next spring with a degree in psychology and a minor in philosophy, but the Rochester native has big plans for after graduation. Loury, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences is currently balancing a heavy course load, several research projects, and volunteer work. Loury isn’t afraid to dream big; in fact, he’s passionate about improving mental health for minority youth, according to Aesoon Park, assistant professor of psychology.

“Jacoby is a truly gifted student and has a special aptitude in the field of psychology,” says Park, who oversees one of Loury’s two research labs. “I’ve watched him actively seek and engage in volunteer opportunities and I’ve been particularly impressed with his work mentoring local high school students.”

A lover of music and a percussion enthusiast, Loury plans to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. He hopes to become a licensed psychologist and would even like to have his own private practice. Loury’s also interested in being a resource to law enforcement.

“I’d love to have the opportunity to evaluate and diagnose the mental health of those accused of committing crimes,” says Loury. “Mental health is such a complex topic and I’d like to help law enforcement understand why people do the things they do.”

An advocate for those facing adversity, Loury volunteers with the crisis hotline where he provides guidance to people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, and sometimes contemplating suicide.

“I’ve learned so much from my time at the crisis hotline and even more from the amazing faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences,” says Loury. “I have met and formed connections with so many inspirational faculty members that want nothing more than for Syracuse students to succeed. I’ve received honest and insightful advice and if one professor can’t answer a specific question, they don’t hesitate to point me in the right direction.”

In his free time – albeit minimal – Loury can be found playing intramural basketball, watching Orange athletics, or taking in a concert.

“There’s so much to do on and off the Syracuse campus. In fact, one of my favorite things to do is check out Destiny USA. It literally has everything you’d want in a shopping mall. In the four years I’ve been here, they’ve added destinations, such as go-karts, bowling, mini-golf, fine-dining, and a new IMAX cinema for the latest blockbuster hits. The academic and extracurricular opportunities here are unlimited.”

So, what attracted Loury to Syracuse University? He says a number of things, but one particular experience left a mark on him. “After a tour of the campus on a nice spring day, I was enthralled by the Quad. I still remember seeing all the students relaxing, playing catch, reading, and eating. It was a peaceful scene - somewhere I could see myself spending a few years. Syracuse University is a beautiful place.”
