P.A.C.K. Your Books summer camp for preschoolers
Children will learn pre-reading skills through play
A new summer camp for preschoolers, P.A.C.K. Your Books, will provide an opportunity for children to gain early reading skills through song, games, and story telling. Sponsored by the Gebbie Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, the six-week camp is designed for all children ages four and five. The camp will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, July 3 to Aug. 7. Cost is $120.
“The Gebbie Clinic is committed to helping children develop emerging literacy skills that support their ability to learn to read,” says Megan Leece, clinic supervisor and director of the P.A.C.K. program (Phonological Awareness Camp for Kids). “This new program will engage children in fun activities that help them develop these skills.”
Facilitated by graduate students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the program will help children practice phonological awareness skills, which are key to developing successful reading skills. Each week will focus on a different theme. Children will participate in listening and rhyming games and activities designed to build their vocabulary. They will also sing songs, share story times, and engage in other small group activities. The program will be held at the Gebbie Clinic, 805 South Crouse Ave., Syracuse.
Parents interested in enrolling their children in the camp should contact Leece at 315-443-5761 or email. An initial screening will be done prior to July to determine if the child would benefit by attending the camp.
