Karl Barth, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, passed away on May 5, 2016 at the age of 77. He served on SU faculty from 1966 to 2005. His research in complex analysis and potential theory was supported by the NSF, and he maintained long-time research collaborations with British mathematicians, visiting London numerous times on research leaves. Professor Barth served a number of administrative roles at the Department and University, such as being the chair of the Budget Committee of University Senate. He supervised the PhD thesis of May Hamdan (PhD 1994) who is now an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Lebanese American University.

Wolfgang B. Jurkat, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, passed away on January 7, 2017 at the age of 87. He served on SU faculty from 1957 to 1990. In 1976 he became John Raymond French Professor of Mathematics; this endowed professorship honors the memory of John Raymond French, the first Professor of Mathematics at SU and the first Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. His research was remarkably extensive, with over 100 papers on such subjects as differential equations, harmonic analysis, approximation theory, and number theory. He received numerous research grants from the NSF and supervised 6 PhD students at SU: Donald Lutz (PhD 1965, Professor Emeritus at San Diego State University), Harold Benzinger (PhD 1967, Professor at University of Illinois until his death in 1990), Gary Sampson (PhD 1970, Professor Emeritus at Auburn University), Leonora Benzinger (PhD 1972), Melvin Friske (PhD 1977, Professor Emeritus at Wisconsin Lutheran College), and John Van Horne (PhD 1979). Professor Jurkat initiated an exchange program at University of Ulm which continues to this day. This program enables graduate students from Ulm to study in the U.S. for a year, including at SU.

Guy Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, passed away on August 30, 2017 at the age of 95. He served on SU faculty from 1966 to 1987. Professor Johnson's research was in complex analysis and the theory of harmonic functions. He supervised 5 PhD students at SU: Richard Summerville (PhD 1969, Professor Emeritus and former Provost at Christopher Newport University), Clara Lim (PhD 1970, Professor Emeritus at Westfield State College, deceased 2009), James Porter (PhD 1972, Professor Emeritus and former Department Head at Western Kentucky University, deceased 2005), Ronald Barnes (PhD 1972, Professor Emeritus at University of Houston) and Thomas McDonald (PhD 1976). He also served a number of administrative roles at the Department and the College of Arts and Sciences.
