B.S. in Human Development and Family Science
Human Development and Family Science is an interdisciplinary social science field focused on understanding the complex process of development from childhood to older adulthood with a specific focus on using that knowledge to promote optimal individual development and family well-being. Specifically, our department examines the social, physical, emotional and behavioral development of humans throughout the lifespan and across different family, cultural and social environments.
The Human Development and Family Science Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree for students who are interested in understanding human development from infancy through end of life. Students learn to utilize scientific-based approaches to understand and support individuals and families within communities and cultures. Additionally, students learn about the dynamics of healthy human relationships within family settings and how to manage family conflict and challenges. The program culminates in a year-long internship where students apply the information learned in their coursework to engage with agencies directly serving children and families.
Professionals in this field often work with individuals and families during important life transitions through service delivery, program administration and policymaking. Students pursuing this degree will therefore be prepared for a variety of careers working directly with individuals and families, as well as roles in program administration and policy development. Professional opportunities include improving equitable access to education for young children, advocating for the well-being of older adults and other positions that support human development and family functioning. Students are encouraged and supported to pursue diverse learning opportunities through research, volunteer and employment opportunities in order to complement their academic preparation.
