A&S Professor Quoted in NYT on Taylor Swift's Cultural Impact

The article examined how Swift's influence extends beyond music to affect museums, nonprofits and local businesses through devoted fan engagement.

Theo Cateforis, associate professor of music history in the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Art and Music Histories, was quoted in a New York Times article exploring the widespread cultural and economic impact of Taylor Swift's influence on her fan base. The piece analyzed how Swift's subtle references in music videos and public appearances drive fans to museums, businesses and cultural institutions around the world.

In the article, Cateforis explained the psychology behind fans' desire to connect with their favorite artists through tangible experiences. He noted that "part of the definition of being a fan is being a collector in a way, whether you're collecting merchandise, the recordings, tour posters, whatever the case may be." Cateforis added that fans "also collect experiences," and that "making that trip to the museum is a way of collecting an experience that ties into what Taylor Swift means to you."
