The College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) Dean’s Advisory Board (DAB) gathered on campus this fall for a three-day series of events designed to connect board members with the people, programs and research driving the College’s future. Comprising accomplished alumni, parents and friends of A&S, the DAB provides guidance and advocacy to help advance the College’s strategic priorities and long-term success.

After welcoming new members Patricia Arundel ’87 and Kelly Sheridan ’92, P’23, and recognizing Steve Huttler ’71 for his six years of service as he stepped down from the board, attendees enjoyed a full slate of activities. Events centered on A&S’ Academic Strategic Plan (ASP), a roadmap launched earlier this year to guide investments in research, teaching, student success and community impact. Through immersive experiences and discussions with College leadership, students and faculty, board members gained an inside look at how the ASP is being translated into action across the College.

A highlight was the Day of Discovery, an immersive experience that allowed board members and donors to engage directly with faculty researchers, students and programs aligned with their individual interests. The day began with a luncheon hosted by A&S Dean Behzad Mortazavi and his leadership team, where participants discussed the College’s vision and opportunities for growth. Board members and donors then participated in curated experiences aligned with their interests, exploring topics including career readiness, engaged humanities and mentorship in mathematics that showcased innovative programs across A&S.

Students also played an important role in the program. During a panel discussion on experiential learning, they shared how opportunities such as research, internships and fieldwork are shaping their academic journeys and preparing them for future careers. The day culminated with the College’s Research Celebration, where attendees saw firsthand the breadth and impact of scholarship taking place across A&S. The event connected the strategic conversations of the day to the faculty and student research achievements helping to move A&S forward.

During the formal DAB meeting the following day, members heard updates from College and University leaders on admissions, enrollment, advancement and student success initiatives. Sessions explored mentorship and recruitment efforts, as well as the role board members can play in supporting these priorities. Chancellor J. Michael Haynie also provided a University update, while discussions with students and faculty offered additional insights into the evolving needs and opportunities facing A&S.

By connecting advisory board members directly with the people and initiatives shaping A&S, the gathering reinforced the vital role alumni and supporters play in advancing the College's mission and preparing students to tackle society's most pressing challenges.
