B.A. in Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages B.A. is available only to students who matriculated by Fall 2025. For information about degree requirements, see the course catalog page (archived catalog 2025-26).

The World Languages and Cultures major is now available, similarly offering a two-language track option.

The Modern Foreign Languages major requires 36 credits in courses numbered 202 and above in two of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

Normally students will take 18 credits in each of the two languages. However, they may petition to take 21 credits in one language and 15 in the other.

Modern Foreign Language majors are strongly encouraged to spend a semester or a year abroad.

Option I:

Language #1

  • 18 credits in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish

Language #2

  • 18 credits in another one of the languages

Option II:

Language #1

  • 21 credits in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish

Language #2

  • 15 credits in another one of the language
