Psychology Professor Featured in Washington Post Story on Adult ADHD
Kevin Antshel
Kevin Antshel, professor of psychology in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in a Washington Post article examining the signs, symptoms and challenges of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults.
The article explored how ADHD can present differently in adults than in children, highlighting symptoms that often fall outside traditional diagnostic criteria.
Antshel discussed how adults with ADHD may experience difficulty processing time, noting that time can seem to move more slowly during unengaging activities and much more quickly when a person is absorbed in something they find exciting. He also addressed the concept of “hyperfocus,” describing how intense concentration on a particular task or interest can become problematic when it interferes with other aspects of daily life.
If you're unable to keep other areas of your life on track “because you’re so focused on this one thing, then what appears to be a superpower begins to work against you,” Antshel said in the article.
