Posted on: June 24, 2024

M. Lisa Manning, the William R. Kenan Jr. professor of physics at Syracuse University, was interviewed for a Syracuse.com Q&A titled, "M. Lisa Manning on leadership: Give people ‘the freedom to work on things and the freedom to fail.’" The article delved into what sparked her interest in science, her research on the mechanical properties of disordered materials, her perspectives on leadership and the advice she has for young people just starting their careers.

Talking about the importance of female mentors who supported her through the years, she said, "Having someone that looks like you in a position of leadership, in and of itself, makes a big difference. And the fact that those women were all willing to slough off some of my rough edges, and even when I made mistakes, find space for me to continue and support me…has really made a big impact on both my success and expertise. They continue to give me advice for how to be a leader. That network of women has been extremely important."
