Rayan Mohamed, an undergraduate research assistant with the Engaged Humanities Network in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and a film and media arts major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was featured in an article titled, "Climate migration doesn’t look like you think it does." The profile piece was published by Grist, a media organization dedicated to highlighting climate solutions and uncovering environmental injustices.
The article highlighted Mohamed's journey from Somalia, through Ethiopia, and eventually to the U.S., discussing how environmental factors played a role. It also spotlighted how the Narratio Fellowship enabled her to explore and express a full range of her lived experiences through artistic expression. Founded by Brice Nordquist, Dean’s Professor of Community Engagement in A&S, and poet and social entrepreneur Ahmed Badr, Narratio empowers resettled refugee youth to share their stories in a way that is authentic and meaningful to them and show the world that they are not solely defined by their experience of being displaced.
Inspired by the storytelling work she took part in as a Narratio Fellow, Mohamed is now studying to be a filmmaker. "I want to not only tell my story, but also [the stories of] people like me and people who are underrepresented,” she said in the article.
