CSD Medical Simulation Lab Featured on PBS’ Cycle of Health

State-of-the-art facility gives speech-language pathology students hands-on clinical training in a realistic healthcare environment.

The College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) and its state-of-the-art medical simulation laboratory were featured on PBS’ Cycle of Health. The segment highlighted how the innovative training space is preparing future speech-language pathologists for clinical practice through realistic, high-fidelity simulations.

Located in the Gebbie Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic, the medical simulation lab gives students hands-on experience in a hospital-like environment without leaving campus. Designed to replicate real-world healthcare settings, the lab allows students to build confidence, become familiar with medical equipment and patient documentation, and practice clinical decision-making before entering externships and other clinical placements.

The feature showcased how simulation-based learning helps bridge the gap between classroom instruction and clinical practice, enabling students to develop critical skills in a realistic, risk-free environment before working with patients in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare settings.
