Boston Globe Spotlights A&S Professor's Exhibition at the Farnsworth

Posted on: June 20, 2025

Scott Manning Stevens, director of the Native American and Indigenous Studies program and Center for Global Indigenous Cultures and Environmental Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in a Boston Globe article titled, "‘Native Prospects,’ a contemporary view of the American landscape through an Indigenous lens."

The article highlights an exhibition curated by Stevens at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Maine titled, Native Prospects: Indigeneity and Landscape. The collection includes paintings by 19th-century artist Thomas Cole (1801–1848), whose works often portrayed Indigenous peoples as part of a vanishing wilderness rather than as active participants in contemporary society. By placing Cole’s works alongside historic and contemporary Indigenous art, the exhibition recontextualizes his legacy and invites viewers to reconsider how land and identity are represented.
