A&S Professor Featured in JSTOR Daily Article on Indigenous Values

Philip P. Arnold, professor of religion and Native American and Indigenous studies, and an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Global Indigenous Cultures and Environmental Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences, was featured in an article published by JSTOR Daily examining the urgency and relevance of Indigenous values in a time of mounting global challenges. The article draws from Arnold’s decades of scholarship and his book The Urgency of Indigenous Values.
In the article, Arnold discusses the Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace and its emphasis on collaboration, reciprocity and well-being, arguing that these values present an alternative to Western models rooted in domination and exploitation. The JSTOR Daily article highlights Arnold’s perspective on the influence of the Great Law of Peace, including its impact on American democratic ideals and the women’s rights movement, and underscores its relevance amid climate change, the evolving social landscape and global conflict.
