Magenta Silberman ’15 is a junior in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, who in addition to conducting autism research with Dr. Natalie Russo in the Department of Psychology, is also a member of the Mock Trial Team. Magenta, who is pursuing a double major in psychology and neuroscience, plans to attend graduate school after she finishes her undergraduate studies next year. Her goal is to earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.  We’re excited to feature Magenta this week in our special “Student Spotlight” series. 

1. Where are you from?

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and I lived there for 10 years. I moved up to Maine after that and graduated high school there.

2. Tell us a little bit about life before SU?

I’ve always loved public speaking. There’s something I’ve always found fun about getting up in front of people and performing a piece. Before college I was on the Speech and Debate team all four years of high school, and I attended Nationals three times for that program. I was also part of the Mock Trial team in high school.

3. Why did you choose SU?

I choose to go to Syracuse University because of their focus on Scholarship in Action. It meant a lot to me that a University cared about me going out into the world and getting experience in my field.

4. What’s your favorite thing about attending SU?

My favorite thing about SU is all the opportunities. Everywhere you look there is an opportunity to learn, whether it be in the form of lectures, internships, or research.

5. What’s the best way to spend free time as a SU student?

Definitely being on Marshall Street grabbing a bite to eat with people you care about.

6. In what extracurricular activities are you currently participating?

On campus I am part of the Mock Trial Team and I do research on Autism with Dr. Natalie Russo at CNY Medical Center.

7. What’s your major?

Psychology and Neuroscience

8. What do you hope to do after graduation?

I would really like to go to graduate school and receive my PhD in Clinical Psychology.

9. How is SU helping you to achieve your goals and aspirations?

SU has given opportunities that I never would have dreamed of having. I am able to participate in research and present a poster this April on what my lab has accomplished, I have received an internship at Upstate Hospital, and I’ve learned so much about the field through my classes. None of this would have been possible without SU.

10. What are some of the activities you like around CNY that aren’t SU affiliated?

I love all of the unique shops around, and definitely all the food options.
