In July, Ian Carlino ’13 began work as an editorial assistant at The New York Times Syndicate, where he identifies and edits daily news and opinion pieces for mass reproduction.

The job is perfectly suited for the Syracuse University graduate, who majored in French and political science in the College of Arts and Sciences and in magazine journalism in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

At Syracuse University, Carlino also served as editor-in-chief of The Student Voice, a biweekly student-run news magazine, and served as a resident advisor.

“Studying in the College of Arts and Sciences allowed me to think and learn about new things,” says Carlino, who spent a semester abroad in Strasbourg (France). “A liberal arts education gives a student depth and breadth. It also provides information and experiences that can be learned from and drawn upon in many situations.”

Academics notwithstanding, Carlino considers the friendships he made at Syracuse University one of the greatest benefits of his undergraduate experience. To this day, he still keeps in touch with many classmates and professors.

“The close friends I made at Syracuse University have helped me in a number of ways, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” he says. “I’m also thankful to my professors, who encouraged me in my studies. Having a supportive professor means you can study whatever you find fascinating.”
