Dylan Rocke ’14 has been a musician all his life, but his big break may be just around the corner.

This summer, the former music industry major from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts will begin studies as a master’s student in the Janklow Arts Leadership Program. Based in Syracuse University’s Department of Art and Music Histories, the Janklow Program is designed for people such as Rocke who want to combine their passion for performing with an interest in arts leadership and social entrepreneurship.

“Rock,” in every sense of the word, has been a recurring theme in Dylan’s life. A native of Glen Rock, N.J., he began playing guitar in various bands in high school, eventually landing opening slots for Grand Funk Railroad, jazz guitarist Allan Holdsworth, and bassist John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson, Roxy Music).

As an undergraduate, Rocke was involved with the musical fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and played with and managed various bands. He also took on key projects, such as promoting a local show by R&B singer Garland Jeffreys ’65 and helping out with the student-run record label.

“In college, I learned that there’s much more to the music industry than just performing,” he says. “I chose the Janklow Program because I want to be involved in the arts, but not necessarily as a songwriter or performer. I like supporting my friends and helping them out with their musical endeavors.”

Rocke plans to relocate to New York City and work in artist management or concert production.

He owes much of his drive to his parents. 

“They taught me the importance of being passionate about something and then pursuing it,” says Rocke. “Being in the Janklow Program will satisfy my passion for music and a lot of other things.”
