Sternlicht to deliver Cape Vincent lecture on 'C.S. Forester and the Hornblower Saga'
Lecture part of Speaker in the Humanities series
Under the auspices of the New York Council for the Humanities, Emeritus Professor of English Sanford Sternlicht G’62 will lecture on “C.S. Forester and the Hornblower Saga” at the Cape Vincent Community Library in Cape Vincent, N.Y., on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m. Sternlicht’s lecture is based in part on his Syracuse University Press best-selling book with the same title.
In 2002, when A&E TV showed the Emmy Award-winning mini-series “Horatio Hornblower,” Sternlicht was the online moderator for all the episodes. His knowledge of the life and work of this best-selling naval storyteller, his own books on naval history, and his work with the series shown in the UK and the United States have resulted in international recognition, most notably in Great Britain, when in 2003 he addressed the International C.S. Forester Society onboard HMS Belfast anchored in the Thames.
In 2010, Sternlicht extended his commitment as the Speaker in the Humanities to 2014. In this capacity, he travels the state, presenting free lectures on humanities topics to the general public. Past lectures have included “All Things Herriot: James Herriot and His Peaceable Kingdom” and “The Immigrant Saga: A Memoir of Life on the Lower East Side.” Both lectures drew from popular books by Sternlicht and were presented under the auspices of the New York Council for the Humanities.
Sternlicht joined the SU faculty in 1981, after teaching at the State University of New York at Oswego for nearly three decades. The former U.S. Navy officer has since held various appointments at SU, including acting director of the Judaic Studies Program and editor of SU Press’ Irish Studies Series. In addition to being a published poet, Sternlicht is a prolific scholar, author, editor and theater director. His numerous books include “Modern Irish Drama: W. B. Yeats to Marina Carr” (2010); “A Reader’s Guide to Modern American Drama” (2002); and “A Reader’s Guide to Modern British Drama” (2004), all published by SU Press.
