M.S. in Human Development and Family Science

Human Development and Family Science is the scientific investigation of human development across the lifespan, family processes and community-family interrelationships across various cultural and societal contexts. Professional researchers in this field conduct scientific studies to understand factors that promote healthy development at different life stages and evaluate interventions that support individuals, families and communities.

The Human Development and Family Science Department offers a M.S. for students interested in pursuing research careers and advanced graduate study. The program prepares students to evaluate and conduct scientific research across a wide range of subjects that promote healthy development. Research areas include factors influencing academic success in childhood and adolescence, intimate partner violence in teen dating relationships, coping with changes that occur in later life stages and social and cultural factors that influence developmental outcomes.

Students pursuing the M.S. degree will be prepared for careers in research and for continued study at the doctoral level. The advanced coursework and research training provide the foundation necessary for conducting independent scientific investigations in human development and family science. Graduates are equipped to contribute to the scientific understanding of human development and family functioning across diverse cultural and societal contexts. The Human Development and Family Science Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree for students interested in understanding human development from infancy through end of life. Students will explore how various factors can promote or hinder healthy human development and learn to apply scientific approaches to support individuals and families in their different social environments. The program prepares students to work in roles focused on ensuring well-being across all stages of life, from early childhood through older adulthood.

Students pursuing this degree will be prepared for careers working directly with individuals and families, as well as roles in program administration and policy development. Professional opportunities include improving equitable access to education for young children, advocating for the well-being of older adults and other positions that support human development and family functioning. Students are encouraged to pursue experiences through part-time work or internships in their areas of interest to complement their academic preparation.
