WGS Professor Featured on New Books Network Podcast

Women's and gender studies faculty member Carmel Christy K. J. explored Malayalam cinema's role in shaping identity and daily life in Kochi, India.

Carmel Christy K. J., assistant teaching professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, was recently featured on the New Books Network podcast. The episode discussed the new edited volume “Inhabiting Technologies/Modernities: Media and Cultural Practices in South Asia” (Orient BlackSwan, 2025), which brings together political and cultural histories of media while emphasizing the independent lives, histories and afterlives of media technologies.

Christy contributed a chapter to the volume titled “City as a Continuum: Cinematic Geography of Kochi in Malayalam Cinema.” Her work examines how Malayalam cinema constructs the city of Kochi as a dynamic, evolving urban continuum, revealing how film not only reflects but actively shapes identities and everyday life.
