HDFS Professor Talks Smartphone Bans with Washington Times

A new study examining the impact of smartphone bans in public schools has sparked national conversation.

Matthew Mulvaney, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Human Development and Family Science, was quoted in a Washington Times article analyzing a working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The study found that Florida students subject to classroom phone bans since 2023 showed marked improvements in student participation and performance.

Mulvaney, a parenting and child development researcher, emphasized the need for nuanced research on how technology restrictions affect student behavior and well-being.
