HDFS Professor Offers Insight on Cell Phone Restrictions

Professor Matthew Mulvaney discussed the impact of New York’s new Distraction-Free Schools law.
Evolution of Cell Phones

Matthew Mulvaney, associate professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Syracuse University, was quoted in a 315Mom article titled "Call Me Maybe? New Cellphone Ban Impacts CNY Families." The article gathered reactions from students, parents and educators about the statewide policy banning phones from bell-to-bell in schools.

Mulvaney acknowledged that while phones are more habit-forming than laptops, the ban creates space for students to develop healthier habits. “It’s particularly important to do this in adolescence or younger in order to help them adapt those strategies when they are still flexible and able to change,” he said.

He also compared the resistance to the cell phone ban to the early pushback against smoking bans. “Not everyone is on board, but I believe they will be in 10 or 20 years when they see how much better the education of their children is,” Mulvaney said.
