Kathleen Corrado, executive director at Syracuse University’s Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute (FNSSI), was featured in a ForensicsColleges.com Q&A where she provided insights into New York’s leadership in forensic science and offered advice for students pursuing careers in the field.
In the interview, Corrado emphasized New York’s pioneering role in forensic science, citing its 22 accredited public crime labs and its early adoption of mandatory accreditation and oversight boards. She also discussed the state’s innovative use of DNA technologies and collaborative efforts among labs and universities to advance forensic methods.
Corrado spotlighted Syracuse University’s robust academic offerings, including an undergraduate integrated learning major and six specialized M.S. programs, as well as one of the nation’s only combined J.D./M.S. programs in forensic science. She noted that FNSSI alumni are employed in 31 states and five countries.
She also offered career advice to aspiring forensic scientists, encouraging flexibility, early specialization and active engagement in research, internships and networking. “Say yes to opportunities,” she advised, “and be open to relocating for that first job to gain experience and build your career.”
