Celebrating the Class of 2022
On May 14, the College of Arts and Sciences was delighted to welcome degree recipients back to the Dome stage to recognize their outstanding accomplishments. We're so proud of the hard work and endless resilience demonstrated by the Class of 2022 throughout these last few years. Congratulations, graduates!
From student awards to faculty honors, the 2022 list of awardees shows the strength of scholarship in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Trustee Michael T. Tirico '88, host and play-by-play announcer for NBC Sports Group, delivered the alumni keynote address at this year's A&S | Maxwell Bachelor's Convocation.
He encouraged students not only to celebrate their accomplishments and thank those who had supported them throughout educational journeys, but also to "go out and make moments." He went on to add, "In thirty years, I hope one of you is right here, telling the class of 2052 about the great moments in your life that happened because of your time at Syracuse."
Student speaker and convocation marshal Ashley Clemens, who graduated with a degree in writing and rhetoric, joined A&S Dean Karin Ruhlandt and Maxwell Dean David Van Slyke in addressing bachelor's degree candidates.
Her reflection on what is commonly referred to as "the best four years of one's life" acknowledged the challenges encountered by the class of 2022, while giving thanks for the perseverance and gratitude fostered by uncertain times.
Attendees of the A&S Master's Convocation heard from Master of Creative Writing Sophie van Waardenberg (student reader), Associate Professor in African American Studies Linda Carty (faculty address) and Master of Speech-Language Pathology Kellie R. Smigel (student address), before crossing the stage in Hendricks Chapel to receive their degrees.
Commencement Weekend was back in all its traditional glory on May 15. From the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony, to our Bachelor's and Master's Convocations, to the University-wide Commencement, attendees relished the excitement of these special celebrations once again. Loved ones traveled from near and far to cheer on the graduates of the Class of 2022.
“We come to love other people and are thereby counter-instructed in our own centrality. We get our butts kicked by real life, and people come to our defense, and help us, and we learn that we’re not separate, and don’t want to be.”
Watch these words of wisdom from renowned author and professor of English George Saunders' G’88 2013 commencement speech, which continues to be acknowledged as one of the top commencement speeches of all time.
