Speakers and Honorees Named for Arts and Sciences’ Graduate Convocation

Posted on: May 10, 2021

The College of Arts and Sciences recently announced the following faculty and students who will be speaking, along with Dean Karin Ruhlandt, or recognized in its 2021 graduate convocation:

Jacob Gedetsis
  • Jacob Gedetsis '18, G'21 (student reader). Gedetsis is an M.F.A. candidate in creative writing and also a 2018 graduate of Syracuse University, majoring in both English and textual studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, and newspaper and online journalism in the Newhouse School. As is traditional for the A&S graduate convocation—in acknowledgement of the contributions to the world of letters by A&S’ flagship creative writing program—Gedetsis will read from some of his poetry.
Erica Sandtorv

  • Erica Sandtorv G'21 (student keynote). Sandtorv is graduating with a master's in applied statistics and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. Her research in the program has involved psychology and biostatistics/epidemiology, and has concerned topics such as COVID-19 and breast cancer data.

Caitlin Petty

  • Caitlin Petty ’20 (master’s prize). Petty earned this award in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement in the acclaimed Florence graduate program in Italian Renaissance art, producing exceptional work that crossed disciplinary boundaries for her capstone research project on Lodovico Cigoli’s “La bella notomia.”
Michael Marciano
  • Professor Michael Marciano (excellence in master-level teaching). Marciano is a research assistant professor and director of research in the Forensics and National Security Sciences Institute. His students and colleagues note his dedication to providing a rich and experiential learning environment for students as well as his excellent reputation in the forensics field.

The Arts and Sciences’ graduate and undergraduate convocations, like those for all Syracuse University schools and colleges, will be hosted virtually this year. More information on how to view the virtual ceremony will be forthcoming.
